Ian Brashaw

The best yardstick for measuring capability is
found in the outcomes achieved. In 2004 and
2006, Ian Brashaw, on behalf of a team of
consultants, received Awards for Excellence
from PIA and UDIA for applied innovation in
sustainable development for the C-Air medium
density development. In 2009, urbanplan
received Awards for Excellence from PIA and
UDIA for the residential subdivision of
Januburu Six Seasons in the categories of
Social and Community Based Planning and
Sustainable Urban Development respectively.
Ian has over 27 years of experience in
planning; specialising in land development
and urban design principles applied to the
industry. Ian’s extensive practical
experience and expertise are unsurpassed
when it comes to assessing workable and
marketable solutions in land development.

Ian Brashaw's undergraduate qualification is
in Geomorphology and Sociology before
studying Urban and Regional Planning at UNE.
The first degree acts as the foundation for
an informed Planning and Urban Design
response: knowledge about the landform on
which we build and the ability to interact
with others to achieve mutual outcomes.

Ian has proven experience in identifying and
applying triple bottom line criteria to projects
to ensure successful implementation of
sustainability principles to land development.
His extensive knowledge of the statutory
frameworks complemented by his deep
understanding of the social and Indigenous
cultural context in which the design process
must operate and provide a solid foundation
for all his project endeavours.

Ian’s project management skills are based on a
sound appreciation of the practical aspects of
implementing development projects and devising
strategic solutions to ensure positive, low risk
outcomes for his clients. Ian’s extensive
experience is derived from numerous public and
private sector organisations, based in Australia
and the United Kingdom. Ian’s ability to produce
innovative and sustainable development solutions
stems from experience initially derived from
diverse consulting backgrounds such as Feilmans,
Hames Sharley and ERM. In 2005 he established
his own, independent practice, urbanplan.
